I bought this piece years ago from a woman who lived in Zeeland MI. on EBay and she shipped it to me. I did some research on it and from the label on the back I looked into both the artist and the prison number. It seems that Mr. DeCatsye lived from 1907 to 1971 and died in Grosse Point over by Detroit. He went to prison in 1941 ( when the number was issued ) and was released in 1946...for what I crime I do not know.
This is paint on glass and foil is used to represent both the water and the sun.....for being as old as it is I find it to be very cool and collectible. It was sold at the Prison Inmate Craft Store that stood out front of Jackson Prison ( The State Prison of Southern Michigan ) that was touted as the largest walled prison in the world for many years and is located in Jackson MI. but currently shut down I believe......it is categorized as Prison Art.
It's obvious what he was dreaming about!
Some people collect prison art. I've picked up a couple of pieces during my collecting days, but it is not something I have pursued. Some works have pretty grim stories behind them if you research the artists.
