Enterprise sad iron from the late 19th century. Belonged to my paternal great grandmother who emigrated here from Ireland, and passed down from there. This type of iron was kept heated on the stove and the detachable handle was clamped on when needed. This way the iron was always hot and ready for use. These days, it comes in handy as a book end.

The matching trivet for the iron I happened upon at an antiques store many years ago.

By the way, I looked up why they were called "sad irons" and learned the sad in sad iron (or sadiron) is an old word for solid.

I have a few of these. Didn't know they were called Sad Irons. Great story.
