The box is a maroon color and 2 1/2 in. by 1 1/4 in. with an eagle embossed on it. I can find no writing on either the box or the instrument. The back side of the instrument looks like it should slide open but we cannot budge it.. it was with some other military stuff of my Dad's(world war 1)

Looks like a capper w/ scraper for a muzzleloader rifle. Does the brass appear to have a compartment to hold small objects? Great piece- Love it!

Yes, it seems like the bottom should slide but we can't move it. What would go in such a small compartment? Thank you so much. For years I have wondered what it was!!!

The eagle is an early military style. Is that a sharp blade? Try soaking it in Liquid Wrench, Blaster or similar a week & then see if the part slides. It's in nice condition. Would like to see a side-on pic.. Not so sure about the capper idea as I have seen loads of them. This is the kind of thing that keeps me awake nites!

It is a fleam or bleeder. These automatic or spring loaded ones are more desirable than the typical blade type.

The case is a great addition and makes your example very desirable.

Figured Scott would pop up & save my sleep time.

You are very welcome laurabel, Small ignition caps for a blackpowder rifle fit inside and it keeps them in aligned order to assist in faster reloading. Could very well be a civil war relic from the looks of the case. It's a heirloom piece, thank you for sharing!

Come on Tom. Just when I thought I could get a good nite's sleep! I can see how the blade could be used for extracting used caps but the shape doesn't look like any capper I've ever seen. Are you sure?

The blade looks broken, probably from along time ago. But I would use it as a pipe tool for my Churchwarden, like for single malt Scotch conversation! Porte Sante =^)

Hi laurabel, could you please post another picture that shows the other side of the device? Thank you =)

Not a percussion cap tool-- it is a fleam. See the numerous examples of the same style:

Good call scottvez, drinking affects my judgement. Right now I'm sober & trying to hitch a ride to the Netherlands! What's a fleam?
    12. tom61375, 11 years ago
I just looked it up. I need one of these to get the blood out of my alcohol system!

Thanks Scott. I can go to sleep now. And Tom, you are going to the wrong country! I live in the Netherlands Antilles! Think St. Maarten & Caribbean, or however you spell it. Just half of the tab is more than Al Gore can afford now! Are you in Amsterdam now? I can recommend some fun spots.
