I bought this beautiful painting for £10, I think it is NOT an oil painting - some other kind of paint, although it is on a canvas. 23" x 19". It needs a bit of a clean (not sure the best way to do that). The splashing wave detail is very clever as are the lighting effects. I have read in various places on the internet that H. GAILEY paintings were mass produced copies from a factory in Hong Kong - 10,000 a month and that is why they are so common. I do not know if there really was an artist H. GAILEY but if there was or is, then the fact that they were attractive enough to mass copy, must make an original quite valuable. A useful painting for interior design - instant blue colour (color).

I used 2 cameras - a newish 16mega NIKON coolpix S6300 for the main picture and an old secondhand 6mega CASIO exilim EX-Z600 for the close-ups.

Thanks aghcollect. The painting is very impressive in 'real life', the photos don't really convey how good it is. It is an 'attention grabber' at the first glance.

This might actually be an oil painting. An artist friend of mine who paints in oils said that it could be mixed medium or even all oils. The rock detail does definitely look like oils. . . . What made me doubt it was an oil painting was the sky is very thinly painted - not what I am used to seeing on an oil painting - but I am told that oils can be appliied very thinly if required and are not always laid on thickly.

My friend only saw the photographs on this web page and has not seen the original, I will try to show him the original sometime, to get his opinion on it.

Hi, I have an H . Gailey oil painting that could put the rumours to bed. It actually has a hair painted into it, which you would think could only have come from the artist. This could be easily proved to be European or Asian.

      Good detective work.
Do you remember the TV detective series Columbo?
Joking aside, it would be nice to know more about H. Gailey.
      Thanks for your interesting comment.

Hi i too have an H GAILEY painting but i have notice one thing no one talks about and that is the signature the painting that i have story goes it came straight from H GAILEY the old man that gave it to my bf told him storys about meeting the artist long story short the one that we have that came from him the signature is hard to make out the last name so the ones where the last name is clear are copies

Is this by the same artist that did the wave painting on the back wall of the living room set in the Jefferson's TV Show?

I am also interested in the signature - took me a bit to decipher it as it certainly isn't as legible as you usually see. Also it's missing the initial "H"- just the surname as a signature. Anyone else come across this?
