Turn of the century spyglass

Hello everyone. I am hoping someone can help me settle a family disagreement. This spyglass which has been handed down through a few generations comes with a story like this. (brief version) In 1880 my great grandfather boarded a sailing vessel described to be a pirate ship and kept this spyglass as a memento. In an attempt to identify this and verify the story my searches have come up empty. I cannot find even one that has brass fittings, that read "Made in France" and chrome tubes that read "S&A SLOOP 12X". At first I just wanted to settle this story but now it has become a mission to figure this out. I would like to pass it on to my son with something that resembles a true story. Any information or even a resource I would appreciate. Tim
