Here is a pair of rather poor condition Croix de Guerre and a Victory Medal with Battle Clasps consistent with the 33rd Division, American Expeditionary Force, (AEF). I am working on collecting Victory Medals for each division of the AEF, and although this one is in poor condition, it was one I needed and Bonus! I have the name of the original owner from the estate this came from!
My research shows Jack E. Johns enlisted before US involvement in the war in February 1916, and rose through the ranks to Sergeant First Class by September 1917, and reportedly still later as a Warrant Officer. He served with the AEF from May 1918 to May 1919, and records confirm he participated in the Some Offensive, Meuse Argonne and in the defensive sector, and that he was “cited for gallantry in action” which would explain the Croix de Guerre. He was discharged in 1920, and during WWII he registered for the draft at the age of 48. Needless to say, more research is to be done.
