This was found in the Victorian goldfields Australia while i was detecting for gold. Haven't been able to find another the same anywhere on the net. I think it is military in origin.

Very, very similar ones were used by the South during the War Of Northern Aggression in the States. I think most, if not all, were imported from the U.K..
Two piece interlocking buckles were used Pre- War and in the Civil War-- most styles were made in the US/ CS.
I have never seen this particular motif.

looks Irish to me but know nothing about it ............but i like it ..nice find
A quick search shows your style of surrounding fauna on Confederate & federal U.S. Civil War naval buckles. Looks like they were probably cast from the same mold & I believe from the UK. Just seem to remember that from past research. I did find where this style was made in the South also but not with this style fauna.

might try these folfs if you can pinpoint it here....
Roy, that's exactly the same thing only entirely different. This was far from an uncommon style of buckle in the 1800's. Some of these were even made in Texas with the "Lone Star" during the War of Northern Aggression. They were also made in Columbus, GA by Haiman Bros. during that era.
Looking back at the pic., I can' help but notice that there appears to be no wear on the convex centre part which means it wasn't worn much if at all. There are no markings on the back? Is it brass as all I know of are?
Lucus ..I wasnt putting up the picture as a looks like or close ...... just the name of the folks selling it for a contact for Auss...to see if they might pinpoint the where abouts of where it came from or who wore it ..thats all Like I saidi know nothing about it ...Am i'm sure you know more then most in this case ...
Oh, that flew right over my head. Where is the poster in all this? Haven't heard from them. Guess we are more interested than them.
By the way Roy, It's Lucas, as in "the prince of darkness" Eng. elec. stuff.
