This is the latest addition to my tool collection, I have no idea what it is though? when i purchased it, I thought I was buying a early hammer drill, that was me guessing because of the action when winding the handle, there is a loud clicking as you wind the handle which causes the point to jolt, very much like a modern hammer drill. I have thought maybe leather work? The only name I can find is Rapper which is written on the side, whenever I type in Rapper I only manage to get endless amounts of singers, I cannot find anything to identify this tool?
It does also have Patent .......... stamped on it. If anyone can tell me what this is used for i would really appreciate it.

Does the bit turn when you crank it? Search the Patent number, that should tell you.

Yes AzTom the bit turns, the bit is kind if like a drill bit, it as 3 groves from point to 3/4 up the bit. kind of like a WW baynet, not sure i've spelt that correct? how do I go about seaching the Patent number?

Bayonet & my guess is that it is for punching a stitching line on leather before actual stitching. Does it look like it will "walk" as it punches holes?
    5. ruralshopper ruralshopper, 11 years ago
No I don't think it would walk, the bit looks like it cuts a clean round hole, I had thought leather work but still can't identify another like it.

I have recently seen the gentleman who I purchaced this tool off, he is approx 85yrs of age, he informed me this was his grandfathers tool. it was used for drilling walls in construction. it does work like a hand operated hammer drill. I have checked the patent number & it was patented in 1927 in the uk & 1929 in the US, the patent was for a change of design. the names on the patent are William Guy Pell & Sidney James Brown. I can find many styles of hand drills but none with a hammer action. if anyone knows of any similar can they please inform me.

I would check with tool collectors clubs/forums in the UK.

A link to the patent for others to view.
