These belonged to my grandparents in the Virginia mountains and are certainly antiques. There are two pair, which are meant to complement each other and make a set. No identifying marks. From the look of the grain I’d guess they’re oak, but I really don’t know. Wicker seats. Interesting spiral-type design on the spindles. The spindles seem rough, almost like twigs, and the carved designs are not perfectly symmetrical. All signs point to handmade, not factory work. My granddaddy ran a sawmill from around 1915 through the 1930s and knew a few fellas who could carve some wood. All I have are guesses, but I'd love to know if these conform to a known style, maybe their age and type of wood if possible. Not asking for an appraisal and I don't want to overstep any site boundaries but I am curious as to the possible value as well. I am grateful for any info I can get.

Oak pressed back chairs. Very common and mass produced in large numbers.

These date from about 1890- 1915. 20- 30 years ago, I used to see these in almost every antique store-- usually priced at less than $35 each and not selling.

I believe a set (4/6) would be more desirable and would garner more, but I would still expect individual chairs to be less than $50.

Hello and thank you so much for your comment. I was competely in the dark as to the origin of these and had been wondering for several years since they came down to me. Very, very helpful. Thank you!
