Found this incredible 9" cloisonne vase at VOA this afternoon. The deep red "pigeon blood " enamel glows with the silver bamboo design background behind it. The foot appears to be sterling but the rim looks more like brass maybe just dirty. The detail and colors are wonderful but........... the plain side has a 1" bulls eye with a small chip in the middle. Something must have hit it hard, but it's not dented. It probably could be repaired although it might cost a bit. I've seen pairs of these in the 7 1/4" size going for several hundred dollars. So this one at 9" with the damage is probably still worth more than the .90 cents I paid for it ! It's marked "made in Japan" on the bottom but they are attributed to Ando and date from 1900-1940. -Mike-
NOTE: I've read on a few restoration sites that they use "optical epoxy" to repair fractures in cloisonne.Much like a repair to a car's windsheild. As long as it isn't dented (this one is not) the repair is virtually invisible when finished.
Love the color!
Thanks Sean, :) The pics really don't do it justice. The body of the vase is silver and it really shines through and makes the red enamel stand out.
Your very welcome mikelv85 :) I bet it is stunning in person :)
