Asian Mask Pair with Chipped Gold Leaf

Quite heavy, solid carved hardwood pair of ornamental masks, similar to recent common Chinese tourists masks with the same or similar subject, but larger than most, and with an unusual look and tone to the carving which appears to have a different Asian influence (or perhaps regional Chinese?). They seem to be quite old judging by the accumulated dirt in the crevices and the overall feel. They came from the estate of a woman who was a world traveler and had expensive tastes (Marbro lamps and Knoll furniture for example). They are not identical, but nearly so, differing in only the proportion of the details.

Each mask is 13" tall by 8.5" wide and around 4.5" deep. The jute was used to hang them for displaying them for sale. These pictures are of one of the pair. They have no visible markings of any kind.

Any ideas at all? I've had no luck figuring out where they come from or how old they might be.
