I love looking at old tools at the flea market. I found this one this morning. I have no idea what it is and neither did the seller. There is some wording on the side, but it's too worn and pitted to be able to make out what it says. When you push the handle lever forward, that opens the end of it, and then you squeeze the handle to close it. It's obviously meant for holding something, but what? I couldn't pass it up for only $2.00. It measures 17 inches long.
Looks like an early version of a nifty nabber.
Seems strange that it's curved like that though, almost like it's for something specific.
Thinking back I seem to think they were called a third hand or a spare hand. Been to long to remember exactly.
It doesn't clamp down like Vise Grips. Once you let go of the handle, it'll let go.
That is what it is suppose to do.

Awesome, thanks TubeAmp! The only wording I can make out on it is "Made By". I'd really like to know why the end of it is curved like that though. It just seems like it's for something very specific what would be curved as well. I don't know, maybe I'm putting too much thought into it.
I believe it to be a traper's tool. It was used to pick up and place traps under water They were placed under water for beaver............ I hope that helps...........hotairfan
Thanks, h.a.f. I'll research that angle.
Maybe(my favourite word) for lifting your mother-in-law's hand off of your shoulder, arm, etc., without performing an unnatural act. Like actually touching her!
hotairfan, you are correct! I put this tool in my handy, dandy electrolysis tank to get the rust off. Took it out this morning and cleaned it off. Now I can read it. It's a Triumph Trap Placer made by the Triumph Trap Company in Oneida, NY.
I'm glad I bought it for $2. I just checked eBay, and the last one sold for $47.88.
I've trapped beaver in the water but usually have better luck around the pool bar.
