I really know absolutely nothing about this item other than it needs a good clean and is very heavy!
There is a mark on the inside of the ceiling rose part but I have no idea what it says. I have posted a picture of it.
With those pics, I doubt that many who even bothered to look at it knows what it is. Suggest reposting with decent pics. Wouldn't do any good to change the pics on this posting as it won't be seen by people watching new postes. I find that most of us are like me & don't bother to clk on a lousy pic. You'll get the hang of it & welcome.
Why are they 'lousy'? When I click on them they are very large and clear! It is a light fitting, which again is very clear.
Just trying to help luv. Look at other postings & then notice that you only have 1 "hit". Bright clear pics get attention & responses while dark pics don't. Let me guess: You took them with a phone camera? I'm just trying to show you how to present your items so that you get the attention you want. Take another comparative look at your pics while I commit Hari Kari.
No, I took them with a camera. Maybe in the daylight would be better. I just posted them to see if I could get any pointers, I didn't realise I needed to be on the same level as David Bailey. The item is very dirty and dusty too, which probably doesn't help. I appreciate your advice; just not the abruptness. Really unnecessary, but thank you in any case.
Sorry it I seemed "abrupt" but just trying to give pointers. We are a congenial group, but do get irritated a bit when somebody posts dark pics that we can't understand what they are showing. Remember that your 1st pic is what shows on the site & should be your best. Some beginners use the worst pic 1st & people pass up looking because it has no appeal. Kind of like advertising. Put your best foot forward. Now, was this an orig. candle chandelier converted or what? I couldn't tell by the pics. Again, welcome.
No, I really appreciate your pointers. To me they didn't look too dark. I have tried to edit them but these are as good as it gets at the minute (It is 4am here and dark). I honestly have no idea. From what I can tell it doesn't look as though it has been converted and inside the ceiling rose part there is a mark of some sort; again I can't make it out. I bought it very cheap as I thought it was nice. It weighs a ton though!
PS: Who is David Bailey? I don't live in the States & a lot of other members don't either.
It could've crashed at Roswell...just kidding! Great piece, Love it!
Weighs a ton is a good sign! Have you taken it apart & are there marks at the base of each arm showing where they fit? It's after midnite here & I have to crash. Later.
Ha! David Bailey is a famous photographer here :) No I haven't taken it apart; I am not really sure what to do with it. I will investigate and post again later. Insomnia has its positives! Thanks again.
Tom it really could have! I was expecting something small; not at all! I am hoping I may discover it is worth a load of money-aren't we all :)
Tell me about it, I'll sell a kidney at blackmarket prices! LoL
Ha! Yep me too. So, do you know anything about this UFO type light fitting?
Unfortunately I have no idea! =^/
But if you place a piece of paper over the maker's mark and use a pencil or crayon to make a rubbing, it will probably make it easier to see. Try it! =)
Oh, thank you! That is a really good idea. I will let you know :)
I have a 5 lamp similar to this, I will check it and see if marked with a hallmark also, and see if I can decipher if it has same.
Just a guess, but thinking older DC current household wiring. possible for a 6 volt windcharger system from the late 1930's-50's here's a link to the charger itself
http://windcharger.org/Wind_Charger/Wincharger.html
Hi Kerry. I have tried the rubbing a crayon over it, but it hasn't worked which is really annoying :( All I know is it is a small rectangle shape and there is definitely something (letters/numbers)written inside of it. Sorry for my dumbness; windcharger?
Back in the day, in remote areas no electricity was available, People would have storage batteries and a windmill set up to recharge the batteries, thus having electric lighting. This was a Direct Current (DC) set up instead of what we use commonaly AC. the base of the lamp holder on yours has a twist lock two prong attachment for what appears to be a 6 volt blub, similar to an automotive style lamp.
So does that indicate a date on it? :/
Be tring to lacote the bulb styling, could range from 6 -32 volt from my searching, again windchargers were popular from 1930's-50's in DC wiring. Today's technology allows for the same voltage and current as used commonly by standard. So again my guess would date from as early as 1937ish to 1954
Ah so it is old then! I bought it for £5 (bargain!) so now it would be trying to find out if it has value and what that blinking mark means!
I guess I was the first dummy to click on this, but alas, I could see it clearly. Maybe my glasses are just better than some others. The mark looks like a man lying on his side holding up a lamp. I searched forgers marks but couldn't find any match.
Thank you 'aghcollect', I thought it was really clear too and when you click you can zoom in too. I have Googled till I can Google no more, and brass ceiling light kinda all look the same to me!
Did you look at the mark? Doesnt it look like a man lying on his side holding up a lamp, or am I losing my mind?
All I can see is 'USA' and I am quite sure that is me losing my mind :) I am not sure what to type into the search engine; I am not even sure if it is brass!
Use your 4th picture, tilt your head to the right - top left corner is the mans head, he is leaning on his right arms elbow with his muscular chest facing forward - his left arm is out-stretched towards the right top corner and he is grasping what looks like a lamp. -- It sure looks like cast brass and I checked another fifty or so foundry marks but to no avail.
Nope I can't see it :) It seems to be in a 'Rococo' style. There was a few similar on my searches, but they all vary in decades!
I think this will help. =)

Hey Tom. That lamp is beautiful. I wonder if it has any weird marks inside? Maybe I will be cheeky and ask :)
Tara, here the bulbs used, photo #4 on this posting

Dear Tara,
Not cheeky at all. I will always be happy to answer when I think I might be of use. My little two armed light is cast bronze and has no marks what so ever, unfortunately.
I have looked at your images. Sorry, but I have nothing to tell you about your fixture.
David Bailey on the other hand is well known to me and I would venture most Canadians with an English connection.;0)
Thank you for sharing your excitement and interest in your fixture. I hope I can be of use to you in the future. There are many more knowledgeable people here and they are very generous with their time and thoughts. Some times though an item is posted that just doesn't line up with members areas of interest.
More often however postings bring loads of information, opinions and ideas about research.
