I was given a Lee Reynolds Painting (not a Poster) by my ex that was going to throw it in the trash. It is 48'x60 without frame & is signed Lee Reynolds. It looks to be Oil paint on canvas. It also has a pencil mark on the back of canvas that says it is A-6042. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the value or any other information that would help.
The A-6042 shows that it is a Vanguard piece. That means Lee Reynolds did not actually paint it. He allowed his students to use his name on paintings as a way of promoting his name. Real Lee Reynolds paintings include his last name "Burr".
Dizzydave is right on.
Thank you for your help. Does that mean that it is not of much value since his student painted it?? I only ask because I have found a few on ebay not signed Burr that are starting in the $300 range as high as $1200.
Did you notice the ones at 75.00, 95.00, 300.00, 1200.00 not one of those has a bid or a buy it now sale. Thats because everyonen on ebay that I see is all by the Vanguard Studios Students. Lee would sign his own paintings Lee Reynolds Burr or Lee Burr. There are a few paintings he signed very early in his career 1960-61 Lee Reynolds but very few. Here is some info on Lee. Dave
Lee Reynolds is another FAB example of the 60s trend of art for the masses. Artist Lee Reynolds Burr founded Vanguard Studios in 1964. Like C. Jeré and
Vanguard Studios produced more painted canvases bearing one signature, Lee Reynolds, than any artist in history, but none of the artworks for sale were actually painted by Lee Reynolds Burr.
Artisan House, Vanguard Studios employed numerous artists to duplicate original paintings. Backgrounds were often done in acrylics and then line-work was silkscreened from the master copy. (This silkscreening technique was also used by Andy Warhol’s The Factory.) Details were then added to the screened lines to create a raised effect. The finished product was then sprayed with an oil sealer, thus creating an original oil painting. Paintings were signed Lee Reynolds. Vanguard Studios also used other signatures including Reynolds, Stuart and Van Gaard.
While looking up much of the same info in reguards to owning a Reynolds painting, or so i thought as well, i looked on the backside of the print to find '506myo'...can anyone tell me what this may mean? Thanks

She told me she purchased it in the early 70s at an art shop on the Plaza in Kansas City Mo.for $500.00. I would like to know the value if possible.

I have a 4' x 5' Lee Reynolds of a Venice Itally scene, real pretty painting, nice complementory colors, hues, sky, clouds, buildings, bridge and a small boat, no people, just a really nice large painting I use to cover an ugly window on the side of my house inside. The painting in a golden thin frame really is a nice piece, but not a Bur, owell. At least I know about what price to ask, I can see how someone would maybe pay more for a painting like this that maybe it's worth. Thanks for all the great information. : )
Hi, I have a very large Lee Reynolds painting just like many others it seems. I'm a little disappointed that he allowed others to use his name as a way of getting his name out there. I wonder if there is a way to find out who actually painted these pieces. My painting is abstract with a painted mat (grey in color), colors are black, dark grey, red, white, with white drops of paint in various places. There is no stamp on reverse side however in black marker there is a number #133143. Also, in black marker 3143J. And written in blue ink is the following numbers 526 4-444-0935-133143. I purchased this at a thrift store just yesterday because I had done a search of the painters name on eBay... and only now realizing the amounts may be far off from the actual value.
I came across a Lee Burr charcoal drawing that is signed in pencil. It is of an old man hanging out of a window smoking a cigarette. I have searched and search and cannot find any info on this piece. It is definitely charcoal and not a lithograph. Thanks in advance for anyone's help.
I have a large framed painting signed Lee Reynolds on the lower left hand corner. There are three white/peach colored open flowers and one unopened bud that branch into the canvas from the upper left corner. There is a number 153835 stamped on the back of the frame. I have no intention of selling it, I paid nothing for it to begin with. It was discarded by a consignment shop in Dilworth, MN and I could not resist it. Even if it has no monetary value, I'd like to know more about it's origin.
I have a abstract oil painting by Lee Reynolds, of about 10 horses. The colors are Blue, Rose, Yellow, White, Gold, Tan & Brown, with 3 mountian types in the background. The painting is signed in the lower right hand side. There are numbers on the canvas back, and on the frame back. On the canvas the numbers are:132443. And on the frame back they are:180114414. The picture measures as follows width is 50" by40" high.

I aquired a signed large Lee Reynolds oil painting looks like sunrise on frost tipped trees with lake and walking path. Would love information about this one
Until the Obama economy, Lee Reynolds paintings were selling like hot cakes in the range of $200 to $450 apiece on ebay. Special ones consistently sold for double and triple those amounts. I could not keep them in stock. I sold a ton to professionals for their offices. When this economic nightmare is over, Lee Reynolds paintings will soar in price. They are varied in topic, beautiful, mostly big and of consistent quality, so their popularity will endure. What's not to like? The older they get, the better they look.
glad to hear that these paintings will only go up and appreciate in value. I just won bid on my third painting. I love the sizes of his paintings and how they are very modern/colorful and really love the era.

I was doing some research on the Vanguard Studios and saw this thread. I do understand that it is old with the last post being 3 mos ago. I do believe that the following info might be of help to those researching Vanguard Studios, East Park Gallery, Lee Reynolds, Lee Burr. The information below is credited exclusively to Ro Gallery who represents Lee Reynolds Burr's original works. None which he created for Vanguard Studios. Below are Mr. Burr's own words from his artist's bio at Ro Gallery. Not sure I am allowed to add a link so just search for Lee Reynolds Burr bio, Ro Gallery and you will get the link.
FROM RO GALLERY:
Lee Reynolds, American (1936 - )
Born in Los Angeles, Lee Reynolds Burr has a BFA from the University of Southern California. He has served as Chairman, Board of Directors of East Park Gallery in Los Angeles.
He was the director for Vanguard Studios in Beverly Hills, California in the late sixties and many thousands of artworks bear the signature "Lee Reynolds" or "Lee Burr". Such artworks were done by others, and following is an attempt by the artist to clear up the confusion existing about these works:
LEE REYNOLDS
I as an Artist have done no more than 200 "Original" Paintings and Sculptures in my life.
Lee Reynolds was simply a trade name. It was attached to numerous artworks and designs at Vanguard Studios. Vanguard Studios was the largest distributor of decorative art in the world at the time. I guided product development. I was personally responsible for many designs, prototypes, and compositions; however, no "LEE REYNOLDS" signed paintings were actually done by my hand.
In fact, paintings sold internationally, bearing the signature "LEE REYNOLDS" were in every case painted by Staff Artists in the employ of Vanguard Studios. Vanguard Studios sold ONLY decorative art, NOT collector art.
LEE BURR
No paintings signed “Lee Burr” done at Vanguard Studio’s, ever touched my hand. Only edition Graphics and signed posters bear the signature “LEE BURR” and that signature is authentic.
Paintings signed “Lee Burr” and done at East Park Gallery only rarely touched my hand. Almost all were produced by my then assistant Rudolpho Carlos, and were responses to commissions from art dealers. They were done and offered in any number of sizes and colorations. They were interpretations deriving from an example work conceived and executed entirely by my hand.
A few of these examples and only a few actually done by my hand at East Park Gallery were ever released; simply because paint was splattered on them over time by my assistant as he produced derivative works. We called such works “series originals”. These artworks were then priced from about $1,000 to $2,000 US.
Important: To identify authorship, and eliminate confusion I now sign all my personal works- those done entirely by my hand- with my full name- Lee Reynolds Burr. I have recently added a thumb print to such original works. I hope this eliminates some of the confusion
Am wondering if anyone can help me, I got a painting which is lovely signed by lee Reynolds and I think is water colour painted, how would I know the date/value? I've looked up online and can't seem to find another the same if it's been done in studios, am I mistaken to think these studios produces loads of the same pictures? Thank you for your help.
I have signed large oil painting, on the back it is 158814? Just wondering if authentic. Have had it for many years
I bought a Lee Reynolds oil painting of a boat house today. It's 61"x49". Neutral colors. I want to post a pic of it here, but don't know how just yet. Just joined this group now. Want to find out anything I can about it. How do I post a pic of it?
Mid-Century Modern is the hottest trend in collecting right now and Van Gaard Studios, Inc., as kitschy as their output was, is sooo evocative of the later part of that era. I am seeing more and more of this type of stuff in the collectors groups of which I have membership. Would not surprise me to see prices going up. Of course, condition is everything when dealing with items of questionable taste. Tacky is one thing but shabby tacky will never sell.
Here is a great article I found about Lee and Vanguard Studios, very informative! I agree with Astroboi that prices are ticking up along with the MCM trend. There are some very cool works out of Vanguard and most are affordable. If you have the space I would not hesitate buying one of his works.
Enjoy the article!
