this tall belong to my grandmother.it was given to me by my mother but the history behind it is foggy,my grandmother was Native American however it is not talked about in my family.this doll mmade completely off fabric.her body is hand stitched, however her clothing looks like it was done by machine. she originally had a papoose with her but from years of play I lostir.was wondering if anybody out there could identify where it came from, what tribe?
How nice to have a family doll passed down to you ! I am wondering if clothes were made at same time . The material of dress is what appears to be what we call flour sack material . As flour came in these very decorative prints and were often used for sewing and also making quilts . The clothes date her from around 40,s . because you say she had a papoose I would guess she was supposed to represent a Indian but most native Indian dolls had bead work ect to help identify tribe .So it would be hard to say a tribe or if she was just a home made doll that was given a papoose to make her appear as a Native Indian . She was made with love for someone and that is all one could tell about her without any traditional clothing and beadwork . I would treasure her as a family heirloom at any rate . I do believe she was made at home with what material was on hand :-) Thanks for sharing her . What is on back of her head that is pink ?
I was told that my grandmother had her on the reservation. The "pink" on the back of her head is best described as a kerchief or head scarf. On her back is a sck where the papoose was.
Hi your doll may have been made by her mother for her to play with instead of it being dressed as a native Indian she used like I said above supplies she had on hand . I have never seen a native American doll with no beadwork or a scarf so I would say it was a more modern clothing like worn off reservation but meant for her to just have to play with with. She can not be attributed to any tribe without the important clothes and beadwork . But again you may have to just love her as being your family doll passed down to you . Sorry I could not help with tribe but have seen many Native American dolls but they leave clues to ID them . She is priceless !
