I bought this chair at a flea market in the south of the Netherlands some years ago. It is 60 cm high and 32 cm wide at the seat. The side pockets open up like a picnic basket lid and are 9 cm deep. The hinges are brass. The feet have rubber floor protectors. The chair is very sturdy and rather heavy. I have no idea what sort of chair this is and would appreciate hearing from anyone who does know! Thanks.

LOL yes, they do look like fishing baskets. Pencils also do not fit, they are too long. :-) I hope somebody out there has a clue, for I have none. :-D

I always love seeing odd chairs and this is odd. If I am converting your measurements right I would see this as being a sample chair. Like a salesman's sample. If you research back before 1950 and quite possibly 1930's you will find two possible uses for a full size chair of this design. First would be a sewing chair with notions storage. Second and less likely is a beach chair. Usually the wicker beach chairs folded up and storage was under them. As I recall neither chair lasted for long in terms for marketing. In terms of use they were quite durable.

@fhrjr2 - you are BRILLIANT. I never thought about the chair being a salesman sample. Now have a research tool. THANK YOU.

Keep in mind I said a sample chair "like a salesman's sample" A sample chair would sit in the store and the sales person would take your order according to how you wanted it. A salesman's sample would be carried around by the salesman trying to convince stores to carry it or go door to door trying to get people to order it. Either way it is an interesting piece worthy of research.

I understand that this was , most likely, a showroom piece so I will research it in the appropriate way. I still have to try to figure out the country of origin. Might have to call Columbo in on this case... :)
