Does anyone know any information regarding this listing? I have searched and searched and so far have found little to no info. It is 3.5"×5.5". I found this in a bible dated 1804. I would love to learn more about this item. The writing on the back is very interesting. Thank you for your help.

How old do you think it is?

If you look at it there is an indication of the period in photo 1.
It is a document with a date 187-.
So it was used during that decade.

It looks to be a receipt of sorts.
It was a way of funding the Jesuit Missions abroad.
The wealthy Americans were helping convert the heathens in the East.

      And ...... Indulgences.

If you donate $1 then you have the right to three things:
1 st (1o or primo) - an inscription of your name in the Catalogue which shall be deposited in the grave of our Saviour in Jerusalem.

2nd (2o=secondo) - twelve Masses to be celebrated each year in the most illustrious Sanctuaries of the Holy Land.

3rd (3o=terzo) To a Mass celebrated every week by the Rev. Missionary Fathers in their chief residence.

On top of that there is a prayer: An Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
      An extra!
If you say the prayer once then you receive 100 days of Indulgence. A remittance of 100 days spent in Purgatory.
If you were to say the prayer each day for a month then you would receive a Plenary Indulgence.

These are concepts of Heaven, Hell and Purgatory that were typical of that time.

I remember in the Fifties and Sixties attending Missions at the local Church here in Sydney , Australia. You would go to the Church for special Mass events all week organised by the Jesuits or other Catholic Orders. They were fund raisers and also ways of whipping up fervour within the community.

In the 1870's the Jesuits were coming out from a period when they were banned as an organisation in certain parts of the world. The period was also just after the First Vatican Council of 1868. It was during that period when the concept of Papal Infallability was defined as dogma. The Jesuits would arrive and preach to the converted about the new/old doctrine.

The Jesuits were very good at it too from memory. Fire, brimstone and eternal damnation! All resolved by Indulgences , (a dollar or two) and a suggested prayer.

In many ways your description of "Spiritual crusade Admission ticket??" is very apt!
