    Hi,

I bought this at a local estate and the lady didn't know anything about this unusual lamp, besides that it had been in her family many years.

It's a cast iron lamp, with reverse painted glass plate to simulate a fire in the fireplace.
In front are 2 nude children; a boy and a girl.

Does anyone know the maker or Era of this weird piece??
I didn't see any maker's marks and haven't been able to find any even similar lamps online................

Thanks for your help and for looking,

    Nessa

      Isn't it unusual?!
Someone suggested it's a vintage plastic lamp,
but it's definitely antique and cast iron......
have never seen one with this subject either!

I think it is based on a painting. I cannot remember the painter's name - but I have seen several copies of it. Try to Google "children in front of fireplace painting image...
      Good luck!

Where I am in PA it's about 19 degrees at the moment, plus snowy.......
      I'm jealous!

Not Much better here in Indy. I'm in front of my cast iron trying to stay warm, praying house don't catch on fire.

One came up on eBay, however it was attached to a white alabaster wall, the lamp part lit up the back of the piece so it was functional. I would say it is from about 1915 - 1920 it is old. I regret not getting the one on eBay.

You might research Oswald Schimmelpfennig, a German sculpture who used a number of children in his sculptures.

Yes, I saw the exact same auction on eBay with the Schimmelpfennig bronze lamp.....mine looks very similar in style and detailing, but is unmarked as far as I can see.
      Thanks for all your comments!!

I think that the painting mentioned is titled After the Bath. This Radio lamp is only the second one I have ever seen. I have one. I love it and find that it is just perfect as a night light in the bathroom. Mine is Spelter with a copper wash finish. It is very heavy but Spelter none the less. Is your lamp ferrous?

So cool that you have the same one, Lisa-lighting!!
Not sure if mine is ferrous, sure looks and feels like cast iron though.
      Mine has a black finish.
      I just LOVE this lamp!

      Dear Dr. Nessa,
All you need to do is check it with a magnet. If it sticks then your lamp is iron. The main body of mine is spelter not iron. It is a great lamp. Paul Peel is the artist who painted the picture I mentioned. After the bath. He painted this work in 1890. It obviously inspired the designers of our lamps, 40 plus years later. Just as an little additional fact, Paul Peel was a Canadian. ;o)

I have the identical lamp. It is styled after a painting entitled "Children in front of the fireplace" by Erjy Putanu. It is made of cast iron and has bronze finish. When I got mine it was pitch black but with a soft toothbrush, Q-tips and dish- soapy water and a lot of patience, all the black came off and the lamp is gorgeous.

      Dear VintageVern,
I found the copy to which you refer. The original painting by Paul Peel on which Erjy Putanu based his copy was done in 1890. Thanks to google images you can easily see both together. The painting "After the Bath" by Paul Peel is was the inspiration for both. I hope this is useful.
      Sincerely,
      Lisa

We always had a print of the painting in our family, but I saw the actual picture in an Art gallery in Toronto, last year when we were visiting.

Yes, the original hangs in the A G O.
