This appears to be an ashtray. The color as shown, from my end is pretty accurate. The sig on the bottom is very small and almost looks like the sign for 'pi' but with a slight curl at the upper left, depending on which side is up. Any ideas on the artist?
Yes that is an ashtray and it must have been a popular design because they make them today. The new ones are some sort of Bakelite and I have several in my shop buildings. I get the newer one at the flea market to put different stuff in where it is handy. I never happened to see that mark before but it would be worth time researching it. If you hadn't guessed I use to collect ashtrays, just never saw this particular one.
Thanks so much. I have not been able to find the maker of the ashtray. Maybe someone will recognize the mark; it is so small.
Can you tell us what it is made of? Different marks would be in different databases. Another approach would be to find the maker of the modern ones and go backward to find what they modeled the modern ones after. Obviously this is not a newer reproduction.
Since I use to throw pottery, I am pretty sure this is high fired, cone 10. The glaze color looks like from the arts and craft era and who makes ash trays anymore? Hummm. I still do not even know where to start with the mark. Like I said, if you can even see it, it looks like the sign of 'pi' with a little curl on the end. Any ideas of trails to follow? Thanks anyone
