lithographic limestone
cuba havana cigar labels
circa 1900
a bavarian lithographic limestone (solnhofen limestone).
this piece dates from circa 1880-1910 and is really fun
it shows a collection of habana cuba cigar labels which has been printed at that time. There are labels on both sides. as you can see there are chips to the stone's edges and some spots which look like rust on back side. It should be possible to eliminate the rust. actually I have never tried to remove it….
I've mirrored two of the pictures to make it easier to read.
as you can see this stone has been used to print several labels at one time: flor de santiago, el caballero, lloyd perle, esquisitos, el ganador and el companero. it has been used before therefore you can see shadows of the past printing process as well.
measures approx.
height: 7.5inch / 19cm width: 9.5inches / 24cm thickness: 2inch / 5cm
