    antiques-i…
    (240 items)

We just bought this piece today. Been looking for one for many years, looking for the right one to come along. A friend of ours is a collector of these and he said that this is a very nice example. The wood horn in not old but is of high quality and worth money. He actually knows the guy who does these horns.
These types of players are my favorite with the "?" horns.
It came with about 25-30 cylinders too!

Im not too sure how it sounds yet. I dont know a whole lot about these and I think I was running it at too high a speed and it messed up one of the cylinders :(
So, I was going to tgalk to my friend who knows this stuff before I try again.
The horn, from what I understand was done by someone who specializes in making them. The rest of it is all original. Still learning about this stuff, Im a glass guy!

OK, now that I figured it out my opinion is that it may need a good cleaning and adjustment. The arm that rides along the threaded bar that advances the needle along the cylinder does not have quite enough pressure on it against the bar. When I put just a slight bit of additional pressure on the arm it plays fine, otherwise it stays in one place. Any suggestions?

Sounds like it needs cleaned & oiled.
Have you opened it up to look at the inside?
    7. antiques-in-nj antiques-in-nj, 11 years ago
No, I have not done that

Could it be that the new horn is too heavy & putting too much pressure on the needle. When you said that you had ruined a cyl. I got to worrying about the other cyl's. 99% of all mechanical problems, you look at the last thing worked on. Is it the horn?

No, ev erything is fine according to my friend who collects and knows an awful lot about these things. I just spoke to him on the phone and went over everything with him and taught me a lot in an hour conversation. The machine needs a good cleaning and some adjustment. The screw that is the traveler for the reproducer is very dirty and needs a good cleaning and that will fix it.
He said I got a real steal on it too. Paid 480.00 for it and he said the horn sells for 400.00 alone!

Please be careful. To my knowledge, they don't reproduce those cyl's today.

The cylinders themselves I agree. Most of the parts of the machine itself, they do according to my friend. Its really a beautiful machine and Im told that its worth at least 800 to 900 dollars so I got a deal.

My uncle Bill in Deerfield New Jersey had an Edison and several cylinders. His model did not have a horn.He would crank it up and play an old Amos N Andy cylinder for us.That was his favorite cylinder.

Does any of this troop, know how many times these cyls could be played before a cast-out?

From what Ive read, you typically were to get 200 plays out of a cylinder.
    16. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 11 years ago
I read every word of Windwalker's site & don't remember seeing how many times they could be played. Antigues-in - Yankeedom, I'll bet they were losing quality after 5 playings. Comes under the heading of: Interesting, - but useless info.. Actually, I have wondered about that for several yrs., but it wasn't keeping me up nites.
