Can any one tell me what this Bennington Pottery Piece is, or what it is used for? It measures 5 inches tall with the lid attached , X 5 1/4 X 5 1/4 inches.
The removable lid has a slot across the top about 3 3/4 inch long and 1/2 inch wide, which is inset in the lid by about 1/4 inch. It is marked Bennington Pottery Bennington Vermont *1845, The lid has number *1845T. It was purchased at a farm estate sale. Any information about this piece would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you will find this is Bennington Potters and not Bennington Pottery.
this looks like a money collection box. where you can leave a donation. my grandfather worked at bennington potters a long time ago. i have some small square planters from there.
Bennington Potters started up in 1948 and is still in business. They are very good about answering questions if you send them a photo along with the question. The * before the mold number indicates Bennington Potters. They also have a site online if you want to do some research. Don't confuse them with Bennington Pottery because there are decades and hundreds of dollars of difference between them.
Thank you for the info, Still hoping to find out what this container and strange lid is used for.
So give them a call and ask them. Here are their numbers. You give them the number on bottom they give you an answer.
