Grandparents immigrated from Sweden in very early 1900s. These trolls part of our Swedish Christmas celebration. The figure with dark green shirt is the oldest. The other was brought back from Sweden during a trip in the 1970s.
There is much debate over exactly what this troll is and what it represents. Their similarity suggests a specific meaning. I remember grandmother calling it tomtegubbe. Another remembers being told she is a good witch who uses stick to beat bad children.
Any help with identification, meaning would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you!
Trolls are cool people, so cool there are collectors clubs all over. I have some DAM trolls and think they are neat........saves me having to look in a mirror :)
LOL if you like this fhrj I would not look in a mirror . Your wonderful troll seems to be a animal as it has a tail . I at first thought maybe done by steiff but ruled that out . These have a strong history in legend and their powers in old folk lore . It is wonderful and I have not seen one quite like yours but it is a old one and wonder if stick is original . Love him
Oops that is IF you LOOK like this fhrj not Like .Sorry that was a typo
DAM trolls..........lol love it
DAM made collectable Trolls and they are marked DAM on the bottom of their foot along with the year usually. Early DAM Trolls bring a fine price.

Deb I am still searching for a photo of your guy . I am wondering if it might have been called a Gnome ?
Not sure about a gnome - at least we've never heard that, even from grandmother. I think the stick is original. The other one (brought back from Sweden in 1970s) is very similar. Believe it also has the stick, but am waiting for family member to send photos to compare. Correcting original post: this one is the older.
Look Deb here is same guy as yours someone just posted !

Nice, but think they are from different "tribes." Getting closer. Thanks so much for all the looking!
Yours is much older but I think we are getting closer to the right shape . I also saw one by same artist of a woman with one tooth like yours and a stick . I am leaning toward yours as being a very early version of the Norway troll/ gnome . This character needs a name :-) we will pursue :-)
This is a real sweet troll ! ;-))
Don't feed the trolls!
