    Hi everyone, this piece of art has been in my family for a while now and unfortunately, those who knew where it came from have since passed away so id like to try and find out more about it as it has been a favourite since i was very young.

    i believe my grandparents acquired it when living in the UK or someone from their family gave it to them, this would have been around 1950 (possibly) as they emigrated to Australia around that time.

    the art is ceramic and approx 550mm tall and 400mm wide.

    the images show some detail as follows;

    a number on the back (which is hard to read) but may be 4840 - 2

    there is a signature on the front at the bottom which is a simple SN

    there is a kind of shield on the back

    the only other mark is a hand written 'Denmark' in a type of coloured paint/glaze on the back.

    i have no interest in selling this but would just love to try and find out more about this amazing piece of work - what does it depict and how old would it actually be? who could the artist be?

    any help would be appreciated.

      It might be Bornholms of Denmark. Their mark was a shield with fish, but the older impressed marks aren’t always clear once the glazes etc are added.

      Check out Michael Andersen ..... The tree herrings mark relates to the town of Roenne, Bornholm as Mary H says.

      SN or NS?

      Hercules and the Lernaean Hydra?

      When I first saw those marks I thought Marianne Starck. Her mark is MS. Is it possible that those marks are MS?

      thanks for the comments everyone. i will keep searching information on Bornholms and Michael Anderson but i dont think the initials could be MS. a quick google search on Hercules and the Hydra brings up a lot of images similar to this one so i think you may be on the mark there Vetraio50, thankyou.
