I scored w/ this shelf at Urban Ore today! This is a very sturdy and well-made shelf. It was obviously made for up on a wall which is why the top is not painted, but everything visible from below is painted. It's definitely from more frugal times. I bought this for $4 today!

I really hope you leave this alone and not try to refinish it. Just my opinion but refinishing will take away another bit of history.
thank you aimathena and flhrjr2! i wouldn't dream of messing w/ the patina on this piece - perfectly dry, old blue paint!
the one thing which has me confused is the wood that it appears to be made of. it is very heavy and has a tropical feel to it. this piece may be guatemalan - unique and very cleanly crafted and painted piece. i really love this piece and have put it up in my bedroom where i look at it alot.
