Vintage Plant Shelves

I'm guessing this set of vintage wooden sconce type shelves are for plants?
I guess they could also be used for trinkets, collectables, etc.
They are solid wood, and well made. They look to be handmade.
Update:
Today (3/8/14) I decided to turn them into Shabby Chic shelves, so I painted them an antique white, then hand painted roses on them. I wanted them to be similar but not exact clones, so I made slight changes in the roses, as well as making the leaves more robust on one.
I plan to pick up a couple chunky pink candles for the top shelves and maybe a couple miniature roses for the bottom shelves.
