Trying to figure out it's history:
I know it is a pump drill (or bow drill?)
Pumping the crossbar up and down causes a string to wind and unwind at the shaft, thus spinning a pointed bit that's fastened to the end of the shaft back and forth.
Who might have used this kind of tool?. Where it may have come from? It was donated. So we have NO history to go with it.
The chuck and rod are made of molded steel or bronze (it is hard to tell which.) The cross arm and the flywheel is made of high quality ivory.
A watchmaker would use this.
