Recently acquired this little chest. Outside is metal. Inside wood. Outside dimensions are 12" x 10" x 12". Does anyone know anything about this chest, such as where it might have come from, what it would have been used for, what it might be worth? Our son has expressed an interest in it, and we would like to include some information about it when I give it to him.
Very nice I have seen these uses as doll trunks but not normally so square . Nice find and when the trunk guys weigh in maybe they can tell more . I would date around 1880's by interior and the little boys clothes . So since these usually had a woman in them maybe it was for a boys toys ?
I had a square box like this only it was obviously meant to ship tea - as the paper lithograph art were Japanese in the fields picking tea leaves. I noticed the lid's lip is extended so perhaps it is meant to be sealed tightly... my best guess - and just a guess.
P.S. the child image with the topy might have been added as an after thought - not original is a guess because it is not cleanly cut and applied. Like the box was being re-used. Again - just a guess.
The photo's and paper lining in these old trunks often found with these types of photo's inside , It looks maybe damaged but not uncommon to see these in original old trunks . Very neat piece . It may have served for one reason and later used for a childs toys ?
Looks like an old cooler that's been customized, maybe? Love It!
Lovely little chest -- may have been a hat box. A couple of more pictures with lid closed etc. would help...
Neat little chest. Love the lithograph.
I agree with trunkman. That it might of been a hat box. I have seen two that look like yours from collectors. They call them hat boxes. I will get more information from them.
