This is a beautiful, large tile i found at Urban Ore in Berkeley the other day. It measures 20" x 5". It has a male medusa like mask in the center of a nice shell design and two, rather playful griffons on either end of an elaborate scroll design. It's executed perfectly - w/ strong 3-dimensionality. It appears to be slip-glazed, high-fire stoneware. the back is covered w/ thousands of little holes which were punched in in order to hold well to mortar. There's no signature.
Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all of you as well! and happy treasure hunting for 2014!!
It's similar to the Raffaellesco pieces!
Why not a Deruta attribution?
It's fabulous!

i finally understand your deruta and raffaelesco comment vetraio50!
kidding aside, how old do you think this piece is? i don't see much dust/grit down in those crevices. the quality of this handcrafted piece is really exquisite. but i'm not feeling any great age to the piece.
