I was looking at LanceG’s caps, and thought I would post this one.

It’s a Model 1872 style forage cap, which replaced the old civil war forage caps and was in turn replaced by the 1895 forage cap. I obtained this cap back in the Stone Age, before the internet when we used to get auction catalogues and bid on items via actual mail! And we LIKED it that way! (Using my cantankerous old man voice).

The crossed swords in the first picture is just laid there for display. I wouldn’t want to poke a hole in this old cap for insignia, and I find no evidence of this cap ever having insignia. The crown will collapse down to flatten the cap for storage. The bill is unbound leather and the side buttons are the Indian Wars era Federal Eagle with US Shield. The chin strap is purely ornamental. The interior retains its lining, and bears the manufacturer’s mark of “A.JUS.JOHNSON CO” “CHELSEA,MASS”.

With all the fakes, I question any caps/hats I see but will waver my doubts since you got it when it was new. LOL You have taken good care of it since then.

Thanks Lance. But the lighting in the first and third photos make it look better than if you were actually handling it.

Like Blunderbuss, I am normally skeptical of items like this, but partly because it was listed by the old Roger S. Steffen Militaria Auction House, I've felt pretty confident in this item's authenticity. The more famous mail auction companies were staffed by professionals who jealously guarded their reputations within the collecting community, had the expertise, and would not knowingly pass along a fake – Unlike the chances you take on eBay.

Well said chris-- Steffen was pretty good and lots of FAKE and FANTASY militaria sold daily on ebay at prices several times what they are actually worth!

And I thought this was issued to you! Have you ever looked at: robles@antiqueguns.com ? I've never ck'd out Steffen but will correct that now.

Blunder, I don’t know if they are even around anymore. The advent of the internet would have forced them to radically change their business model.
