Found this neat little frosted glass vase at Salvation Army this morning. It's Cambridge glass and about 5" high and 6" across with an ovoid shape. A design of leaves, vines, and berries encircle the piece and is their pattern #23 called 'Everglades". The collar has a chip in it on the inside edge but it's not too intrusive. There is what appears to be an acid etched name in the middle of the bottom but it is so faint that it's illegible. -Mike-

NOTE: I received a reply from National Cambridge Collectors, Inc. :

    Good Evening Mike,
Yes, your vase is from the Everglade line and is the No. 23 5 inch vase. Your vase began life as a crystal or clear glass vase and then was acid treated to produce what Cambridge called "Pearl Mist". 14 pieces, all from the Everglade line, appeared under this heading in the 1940 Cambridge catalog. Dating would be limited to the very late 1930's to very early 1940's and perhaps even much shorter than that. Just not much info available on this treatment.
    Regards,
    Mark Nye

I have seen these identified 2 ways. Originally, this mold was a Cambridge Glass Company (of Ohio) mold. It was called inverted everglade(s). However, many of the Cambridge molds were sold off into the market, and several have shown up as French / Czech over the last 20 years or so. I cannot be sure who made yours.

Thanks for the "love" and the info twentiethe. Cambridge does sound logical as I do live in Ohio. Wish I could read the bottom, it is so faint, but there are definitely letters there. -Mike-

Not really. There is only one on the side and it only shows just under the neck and a bit at the bottom. The rest is lost in the design. I think that's unusual. There's usually one on both sides. This piece seems to have just one light seam on one side that's a bit raised if you run your finger over it. -Mike-

Hmmm...seeing some Tiffin glass that looks similar too. Not being able to read that mark on the bottom is driving me crazy though. I have this blue vase and a white one as well that I picked up recently that I believe are Tiffin. The pink vase I think is Bristol or Bohemian. http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/90715-blue-tiffin-satin-glass-ball-or-bud-vase

I have the same piece, mine marked made in France on base

Here's the exact same vase on Ebay. They are calling it "Lalique" "Etling" France....Interesting . I've posted an "enhanced" picture of the bottom mark. Something is there but just out of focus.

You'll have to click "see original listing" after the title as the auction has ended in order to see the pictures of the Ebay vase. -Mike-

What a coincidence I was just looking at a piece of CLA on Ebay UK quite similar. Well, twentiethc did say Cambridge sold some of their molds maybe they wound up in France. The Ebay US one is exactly like this. They're calling it Etling or Lalique but I don't know how informed they are other than they have 100% positive feedback. So I don't think they're out right scamming people but it always is a question in my mind as to how much they really know about what they sell.

That's the exact one I had been looking at too ...lol

When the Cambridge molds were released out into the market, several different companies bought them. Some used them as-is (no markings); some altered them to add their own markings before putting them back into production. You can see the original vase in old Cambridge catalog re-prints.

There has been a long standing effort by various collectors groups to buy back the molds to preserve the integrity of the original Cambridge production pieces.

The same thing happened with Heisey. For example, Imperial bought out many Heisey molds. Some pieces were altered to bear the Imperial logo; some were used as-is and a "Heisey by Imperial" label was used. Even Lenox produced a line of "Navarre" etch stemware (an original Fostoria line). Today, Fenton has been re-issuing many old Cambridge designs, but I believe they typically have the Fenton logo incorporated.

The one referenced above on eBay is neither Lalique, not Etling. If you're familiar with either company's work, you'll notice the difference in "look".

Unfortunately, any most unidentified frosted glass pieces typicvally get attributed to Lalique, Etling, Sabino, etc.

Interesting thought. Hard to say how any given company might re-purpose another company's molds. I have seen vase molds turned into shade molds .. as well as the other way around.

I never take ebay listings at face value twentiethc, but I seem to find a lot of the things I buy are on there when I go to ID them. I know it's not Lalique but I hadn't heard of Etling or CLA until I started researching. Glass is a new area to me but I buy what I like and has a quality look. If it's valuable it's a plus but never a disappointment. That's why I didn't care if it was chipped. It probably could be repaired but would cost more than it's worth. I have some Cambridge glass candle holders. Do you know who made those little round "poppy" vases? I have two a blue one and a white one. I think they're Tiffin but I'm not sure.
    15. twentiethc, 11 years ago
I have seen those blue vases before, but I'm not sure who made them. I'll do a little digging to see if I can figure it out.

Thanks twentiefhc........ this is the link to the blue one I posted months ago, along with another mystery pink satin vase.

I'm afraid that's the best it's going to get my LG phone's camera is only 2 mega pixels.I put it under the high intensity lamp on my desk and tilted it till I got the best image. I also ran it through the photo editor and enhanced it. It appears to be two words one five letters long and the other 3 or four letters long. So frustrating !
    18. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
So what year is this one in this color? Maybe early and not a reissue from the 50's.
    19. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
That violet color is incredible ! Makes this one look kind of ordinary. I'm sure those are worth more than this one being chipped and all. Still not too bad a find for two bucks. :)
    20. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
Yes you are right icollectglass. Pretty much all the pieces of the puzzle are here except for the year . Thanks so much, to you and twentiethc you've been a great help and it sure was fun. I have quite a few other pieces I've posted. Check them out if you like and please let me know what you think if something seems incorrect. -Mike-

So if the 5" vase #23 is on the list does that make it better or worse I'm getting confused.
    22. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
It would help to know exactly what this color is called. They said they replaced the "Willow blue" with "Moonlight" This looks like a good canidate for "Moonlight". Wonder if they have a forum to ask questions and submit pictures ?
    23. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
Crystal sounds better even with the frosted treatment. I looked at their color examples on NCC site and "Moonlight" is a blue color. I sent them an email and picture to verify the color, pattern, and year of production. It's an all volunteer system and may take a few days to get back to me. They don't do appraisals though. They suggest contacting one of their many dealers in their directory.

I'll keep trying but it just may be so worn or too lightly stamped to ever make it legible. Tried the black light as well but it really didn't do anything. We need some CSI forensics here...lol.
    25. twentiethc, 11 years ago
You could always try the pencil / paper rub trick. Sometimes the raised lettering rubs better. May be worth a try ...
    26. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
I'm beginning to wonder. It sure looks like letters in a line but it's more like a stencil where the glass isn't frosted. It's not raised or embossed. I just came across this...

The Cambridge versions are found in various colors ... that violet one is quite nice. The more common ones are the frosted and milk glass one. Yellow, cobalt blue, etc. are a bit more rare ... typical of the entire everglade line.

BTW, I believe Mosser or Summit got ahold of some Everglades line molds as well.

Ok here's a new super enhanced picture above of the bottom and what appears to be letters. What it says if it's reversed, upside down , or even if it's just an anomally in the glass is any ones guess. I'm seeing m's or n's but I think that's very little to go on.
    30. mikelv85 mikelv85, 11 years ago
Thanks icollectglass for your help as well :) Now that I have some correspondence with an actual person from NCC I sent Mark the rest of the pictures. They only allow one from the site and a specific question so I choose the pattern inquiry. Now I've asked him about the mark on the bottom and what he thought about that. Also about the chip in the top. I'm thinking the acid etching may have removed the mark and just left behind the shadow since it appears somewhat clear. So I'll wait for his response and we may be able to solve the rest of the mystery. -Mike-

Love to see them ! Think I can finally get out today and do some treasure hunting. Weather is finally out of the negatives. Should be 23 today and 48 by Saturday !

Hmm...checking on the Cambridge glass on Ebay and come across this:

Looks like I've ID's another mystery piece I have. Mine doesn't have a paper label like this one. Hope mine not a knock off but it sure looks just like it.
