Vintage Banana Lounger

I think in the US, these banana loungers are often in vinyl and are pool side or outdoor loungers. In Singapore and Malaysia, these were very common in the 70s and 80s and were primarily indoor loungers, more commonly covered in canvas which made it quite sturdy and cool (in our tropical heat) for someone to lie in it for hours reading the papers or watching TV. They no longer make them.

I remember my mum always had one or two in her house when I was growing up and can't recall why she threw them out seeing as she is such a hoarder.

But I lucked out about a year ago when someone dumped this vintage lounger next to the rubbish chute on my floor and I quickly picked it up and took it home. I stripped the woven plastic cover off the old piece and had an upholsterer/tailor guy make a new cover in canvas. I finally got round to assembling it all together recently. I went back to the old tried and tested manner of fastening the cover (this one originally used screws which meant every hole had to be very accurately made on the cover to match the hole on the aluminium frame) that my mum's versions had which was to thread a nylon twine through eyelets in the canvas and tie them up. So you can tighten the tension if it comes slack through use. I managed to do my own amateur version of lashing and knotting and they held up.

The best part is the lounger is completely foldable and can be stored away easily when not in use.

My mum would be so jealous when she sees this. I can't wait!
