I purchased this at a flea market. It is an 8 1/2 x 10 box that I assume was for jewelry or trinkets. In my research, I have only seen one other like it.
I know silhouettes are abundant but don't know if this is unique or not and I don't know how old it is. Basically, I don't know anything about it! There isn't any name or mark on it. Does anyone have info about this piece? I would love to learn more about it.
I will post mine - very similar circa early 1900's
Yours jewelry box does look like mine! Thanks for sharing! Good to have an idea of how old it is. Mine has the mirror inside as well and the bottom needs some reinforcement but I am afraid to do anything to it.
I have only seen two other similar, yours makes three now. My grandmother was given this for her 10th birthday which was 1912.
I assume everything that looks white in your first picture is actually mirror reflection (her hair, her shoe, dog collar, dog's tongue) and the background is a yellowish color like mine. - The detail in the wood on yours is exactly the same as mine except mine is painted gold.
That is correct, it is yellowish. The bottom of the box is actually a thick material that looks like cardboard so I am not sure if it is correct. Does yours have the same material on the bottom as on the sides and top?
The sides and top are wood, so is the divider piece inside. The bottom (under my added tissue paper) is a heavy, thick cardboard-type material.
ok that is like mine then. thanks so much for all your info!
Is your wood actually gold, just pictures not taken with flash so it looks brown?
Your design detail is exactly the same as mine, sides and lid frame. I think we have the same box except with different silhouette mirrors. :)
It is gold but some parts have turned brownish, probably due to wear.
Yep - same here except less wear.
Wow I had this one but the box wasn't in as good of shape I think. Didn't buy it in Chicago did you?
I got mine in Ohio. Do you still have yours?
No, sold it at a flea market. The box needed some assistance and I have too many projects going. Thought we might have met there for a minute :))
