This is a Miwok or Maidu acorn grinding stone and pestle. i picked it up at the Alameda Fleamarket yesterday. I've always wanted to find a large one of these for the garden.

Really nice find & appears original. Have to be desperate to eat ground acorn meal but understand it was a staple in hard times.
thanks getthatmonkeyoutofme and blunderbuss2! this piece is quite a bit larger than it looks like. it's difficult to lift. acorn bread is pretty good. i like it.
Never tried it as I'm not desperate. As a kid, tried tasting one & was horrible. Maybe as flour? Maybe mixed with pecans etc.. Probably better to throw the acorn part away & eat the pecans. LOL
some acorns are sweeter than others, and it's necessary to process them before eating them or you're likely to tan your insides!
That's right, they were used for making tannic acid.
leaves and bark were used more than acorns, but same idea... most acorns were too valuable as food to use for other things. some oaks have very good, 'sweet' acorns which make really decent acorn bread. it's a little bit heavy, but i like it alot.

Nice, it looks like it stated out as a flat grinder, is that Metate ? Then when it got deep it was a mortar. Vey nice.
