This trunk is from a few years ago - found at Brimfield Flea Market and I couldn't resist - the size, the finish, and the great label. A woman purchased it from me and gave it to her brother for a birthday gift - all the way in Seville, Spain. I thought that was so cool. Shipping was more than the trunk. Nice brass lock - and that label. Rich, Reed & Atwood - Boston, MA.

Looks like an 1880's wonderful trunk with brass lock and number four latches -- this is a great example of workmanship for their day!

You know trunkman, you have nailed it ( no pun intended). It may be the idea of the craftsmanship that draws me to these. Not sure it can be found in today's world without going back in time

Hi SherwoodTrunks, I thought you might be interested to know the identity of the man and woman depicted on the lid of your steamer trunk.
They are portraits of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and his wife Empress Maria Feodorovna. Known as the Tsar Liberator because he freed the serfs, Alexander II reigned from 1855 until his assassination at the hands of revolutionaries in 1881. Alexander II's grandson was the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II.

I'm a history buff; I recognized them right away. ;) Since the litho says "Welcome" in English, it probably dates to the time that their son Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich visited America in 1871 as a goodwill ambassador.
      Enjoy!

Thanks JazzBabies for the great information. I think I would have enjoyed spending "some" time during the 1870's - 1900's.
