I was told that this trunk is dated between 1870-1890. It's made of wood covered with embossed and flat tin with a metal strap around it. The wood slats were somewhat warped and so dry that they really soaked up the Tung Oil. I had read on a trunk restoration website that when the trunk smells musty, the paper inside it should be removed. So, I did not try to save the original paper on the inside of the lid. It needed a lot of sanding with a wire wheel to get the rust off the embossed tin. I used paint designed for metal on the metal parts. I was not pleased with the outcome of the embossed tin so I painted it using silver paint (for metal). I also used the antique copper colored paint (for metal) on the flat metal areas. It turned out fine and my son has it in his living room. Would love to know if the age quoted to me is true or was the person lying....hahahahahaha.
