Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) in the Czech Republic is, of course, the home of the Sklárna Moser (Moser Glassworks) and the Moser Museum. What it is most known for, however, is that it is a spa town "like no other", according to their website, karlovyvary.cz. About 50 km (about 31 miles) South of Karlovy Vary is Mariánské Lázne (Marienbad), the second largest spa town in the Karlovy Vary region. These two cities form two points of the "spa triangle", which along with Františkovy Lázne (Franzensbad), complete the triangle.
"In the 1920s, the glassworks was the biggest manufacturer of luxurious drinking and decorative crystal glass in Czechoslovakia. It had its own sales galleries in the spa towns of Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázn?, Františkovy Lázn? and from 1925 also in Prague."*
Fitting that these worlds should collide in the form of this vase, in a shape familiar to collectors of Moser glass. Presumably a souvenir for visitors to Marienbad, most likely made just down the road in Karlsbad. This piece goes into a subset of pieces in my collection - souvenir and commemorative art glass. Scans 3 and 4 are from an old Moser catalogue of the 1920s and it shows that Moser had branches in Karlsbad and Marienbad and also has an example of this shape in a different decor.
