This item was found by my neighbor in a rural part of Contra Costa County, CA. It is a ranching area and all that was on the property previously was outbuildings. He dug this up while working around his place which he has owned for 30 years. The first picture shows the side that has the "hook" as shown in the 3rd picture. At the rounded top there is a square hole and around the hole are indentions for perhaps a handle to fit into so it doesnt move around. We have no idea what this might be used for and how old it is. It is 71/4 inches and 2 and 3/5 inches at the two extentions

You should have used a better background. I almost skipped over it. I can't figure out what it was used on but bet, what every it was didn't like it! Somebody will know, I hope. Not near the coast?

It from an old sickle mover, could be horse drawn or newer. Its called a guard & is mounted to a steel bar & a moving knife moves back & forth drawing the grass through the opening that you called the hook, where it is cut.

      Link to my mower.
