I bought this great ring last month and I absolutely love it. It is a silver fede ring. Fede or Claddagh rings have been used since the roman times. They were often used as a token of the connection of two lovers. The design is still very popular today as wedding rings in Ireland.
I have showed you guys a fede gimmel ring some time ago. It was a '60's remake and this time I apparantly found a 1986 ring! Maybe next time I will have more luck finding a georgian one.
Hi Newtimes,
I am no expert on silver but I think the fact you have no duty mark (abolished 1890) and that the anchor comes before the lion means it was assayed after 1900. Difficult to see the letter "M" clearly but it is probably either 1936 or 1986. If the "legs" of the M are straight up and down it is 1936, if it has curled feet at the bottom then 1986. Regards William.
Gracay2004, thank you so much, you totally solved my mystery!!! And you tought me some things about the marks I didn't know.
The legs of the M are curled so the ring is 1986.
Maybe next time I will find an old one!
Thanks val and aghcollect for loving my ring!
