Just picked up this old hand axe. Really cool multi purpose tool with axe head stamped with 3 which I assume is for weight. Measures about 14in top to bottom and blade is 6in front to back. Just curious if someone can maybe help me get an idea on age or maker or model.
That looks machine made to me, no hand forging marks. Looks like an old shingling hatchet, has a nail puller. Well used, that is for sure.
I agree with PR.
I think someone used it to drive in more than shingle nails, the head shouldn't be mushroomed like that with normal use.
I agree with it being a shingling hatchet except this was probably also used to cut shake shingles. A standard shingling hatchet has a much smaller cutting edge. The mushroom is from hitting it with a hand sledge hammer to cut shakes. Not an old item and not terribly valuable.
I also agree, a shingling hatchet. The handle is wrong. The nail notch should be on the bottom side.
I should be able to find you a photo from an old catalog if you want.
