From Left CS-6001 Mendelssohn Recorded in Kingsway Hall, this disk has all the warmth, verve, and acoustic realism to be achieved in recordings of the golden age. With its only downfall, some brightness in the massed strings, the sonic pleasures are found in the quieter passages. This is recognized as one of (if not the best) performance of the work. Although this stereo version of Espana (CS-6006) is a sonic blockbuster, it's the mono version that has a very special clarity and impact in the lower bass. CS-6079, Debussy This is French Impressionistic music at its best, with all the subtlety and delicacy unerringly captured brilliantly by Ansermet. Believe it or not, the Borodon disk (CS-6126) was recorded in 1954. In terms of sheer presence, this is one of the top Londons to capture the concert hall ambience so treasured by audiophiles, and one of the reasons (raison d'tre? I bet I butchered that!) that vinyl lives!

It seems these great records are getting very scarce, everywhere nowadays. The vast majority of my collection was gotten from about 1992 to 1998 from auctions, estate sales, thrifts, yard and garage sales. Those were the golden years of collecting vinyl on major labels. There was even a record store nearby which specialized in used vinyl. The owner and staff knew nothing about classical music and whenever a bunch of it came in, they would throw it all in the dollar bins. In this store you could see worthless Herb Alpert or Barbra Streisand LPs marked at 5 or 6 dollars, but find rare solo violin albums for a dollar or two. I would go through those bins once a week and never failed to take home a half dozen or more, never spending over about 10 bucks. Each week on the way to the store, I held my breath wondering if this was the week they announced closure. Of course it did happen but I was fortunate enough to amass many great records before it happened. Those were the days! I guess all good things in life have to come to an end.

i have had a somewhat simular experiance, my collecting started in 1993, where i got hold of a whole collection of classical and jazzrecords from a retired militaryguy, who had been on the Thule base on Greenland on the danish part, i got them dirtcheap, as all where getting into cd´s at that time, the market right now is totally drained for records here in Denmark, the only records avaliable are new music record( mp3 on records that is :-( .) and popular/easylistning music used, in which i have absolutely no interrest in, they are simply bad in any way.
I use Ebay now to get new records for my collection, thats where they are, and yes it is a bit expensive, mostly due to S & H, but i try to keep a cool head and wait for the right price, in my case maximum is, what they will cost as an reissue from Classic.com or Speakerscorner records who make the best reissues out there, they come the closest to the original sound, which made me collect " Golden Age records " in the first place. The sound and the emotion these records conway, are only avalible on the originals, as i see and hear it
