This is or was really an adorable miniature New Haven Banjo clock referenced to as the Winetka. I walked into my clock guy's shop one day to say hi, and there on the counter was this broken up clock in a cardboard box. "Hey Dorian, what happened here?" Some fellow walked in with Humpty Dumpty clock and said, 'what'd ya give me for this?' Dorian dryly said, "nothing". The guy said ok, and left the box. Long story short, Dorian said take it if you want to put it back together. Sure and I grabbed it. I discovered that there were just a few very small slivers of wood missing from the box. The pieces all fit together pretty well, but s0 frustrating gluing the various parts together because I couldn't use any clamps to hold these little pieces of fluff together. I've got some realllly tiny clamps for fragile items, but put one on this broken up case trim and the pieces will just jostle apart as soon as the clamp is applied. Must use your fingers to hold 2 pieces together at a time until glue thoroughly dries. I'll tell you, if it weren't for the working movement, this would have been in the garbage! Upon close examination or a digital photo, 2 of the 4 glued joints around the wood bezel are obvious. The top pieces of the clock glued together just fine, but the repair IS definitely THERE. Fortunately, the rounded top repair cannot be seen at all with the clock on the wall. "The Winteka is the smallest striking banjo clock with a pendulum produced by any clock firm." Original glasses, but the side arms are NOT brass, so I used a terrific brass paint that will 'supposedly age with a patina' years later. The clock does work great! 18.5 " height
Nice job and congrats on a freebee
how very clever of you!...fantastic job!...well done....:-)
Very impressive! Great job!
Good job. Now what is the name of this "terrific brass paint" & do you think it will serve as said? You can give your opinion in 10 yrs, but don't count on a reply. LOL
Thanks for the love on this Kerry and there are not too many freebies out there that's for sure. The restoration will suffice for me.
Inky, pops and blunderbuss! Very kind of all you guys for the super nice and very undeserved comments on the restoration. Okay, blunderbuss2, you asked.... The terrific paint is Modern Masters Metal Effects Reactive Paints and Patina Aging Solutions! It's a little pricey, but I like it and it goes a long way for small project pieces. If I'm around in 10 years, you will be, too. So there.
Oh, and whenever I say 'you guys', that includes girls, too!
Appreciate the love(s) from both of you aghcollect and shawnicus!
Great job and it's gorgeous....
Guess I'll have to forget that paint. The don't sell anything on this island with a name that long. The locals would fall asleep just reading the name.
Thanks DrFluffy, glad you like it! And Blunderbuss, you can shorten the name to Modern Master Metal Effects.
Now that's "mo better". Haven't seen it here but will look around.
Blunderbuss http://www.modernmasters.com/ for all products?
Thanks Tutzie, but when you live elsewhere, it's not so easy. Can't carry a can on commercial flights & if I have it sent to my shipping agent it cost a min. of $18.75 to get it here by boat. Got to go! A supermarket just got Jimmy Dean HOT in & have to buy as much as the freezer will hold before word gets out!
Understood Tutzie...(7)..nothing more irritating to me is being 'politically' correct!...:-)
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yikes blunderbuss, you don't definitely don't want this paint $$! The Jimmy Dean on the other hand sounds good. And now your going to hoard it! Exactly where is your 'island?' South Seas? or? Is the Jimmy Dean dropped in by an air cargo plane?
Very nice rescue!
Great to read your expert comment on the Ingraham mantel clock, Bruce99! Appreciate the 'love' on this little banjo clock. The scary part was sliding the dial and movement back into the case.
Hi there vetraio50, gargoylecollector and lisa... your love 'hit' on this clock is appreciated!
Tutzie, I'm in St. Maarten/St. Martin, Neverlands Antilles. After 22-23 yrs, I have yet to hear an Amer. tourist pronounce the name correctly for either side. They even pronounce St. Barths as Barts & it makes us cringe!
Very, very cool! The island that is! As far as cringing goes, it's not "Frisco" it's San Francisco...
Where is San Francisco? Near LA? That will get a reaction!
Oh yeah, Los Angeles and San Francisco mentioned together in the same breath? 'That dudn't work so well, blunderbusss :)
I apologize for my faux pas in CA etiquette. I claim temporary memory loss due to excitement over all this Jimmy Dean in my freezer. Is " sausage-shock syndrome" an acceptable defense?
