I acquired this weapon that I believe to be a “medieval mace” a number of years ago. The whole time that have had it I didn’t really feel that it was that old. But recently I have second guessed myself on that conclusion. As I started to look at it more and more it seems that the way the chain is made is something that have not seen before.

I am looking for someone that may be able to tell me the age of this weapon possibly by aging the chain? I have taken a few close ups so you can really look close and see what you see :)

Would love any info that you can drum up as medieval weapons are not something I know much about.

The total length is 17 inches long

    Thanks so much :)

agree that determining the age of the chain might help in dating when this was made. This type of chain is usually called 'double loop chain' and you'll have better luck on research using 'flail' instead of 'mace'.

Modern fantasy item. I see similar pieces on a regular basis at gun shows and in antique shops. The chain and end piece both have a typical artificial "rust" and "pitting".

TalkCakes: thanks for guiding me towards the term "flail" as part of research vocab. I'm still not totally convinced that this is a "modern fantasy item",as stated by Scottvez, but wouldn't be completely shocked to find out that it is.

Hopefully i will get a few more comments and see what the consensus is :)

I would venture to say it is quite modern and probably home made. Four chain links don't allow for much of an impact. The chain looks like zinc coated chain we hooked the coon hounds to years ago. It may be ancient but I think I would want that verified in writing from a reputable source. Perhaps you could send photos to a University.

I did a search on chains not long ago & the style of that center link as I recall wasn't "invented" until after 1850's. Was easy to search. My guess is fairly modern & as fhr said, probably home-made.

TallCakes: i just noticed i had spelled your name wrong earlier..thats not cool of me :(

Thanks for all the comments, i believe it is safe to say that this piece is not "authentic", at best it is a marriage of an old chain and some modern fantasy items attached...as stated by those commenting.

Im gonna called this one solved and move on :)

all is well...i will hang it back up on the wall beside my bed,

Watch out intruders....or i will go Medieval on ya!!!!!

no problem on the moniker spelling I didn't even notice. Glad you were able to find out something on the flail; good weapon to keep close by at night as you never know when it might come in handy.

About as easy to bash yourself as anybody else if making a fast move with one.
