I acquired this big ol' German clock about 8 years ago. I was too late for the estate sale, but fortunately, the Craigslist ad was still posted. I sent off an email with my phone # inquiring whether the clock mentioned in the ad (no picture of it) had sold? I couldn't believe I got a call within 3o minutes. Got back in the old Quest van and off I went to Daly City CA, 10-15 min from SF :) The gal was having an estate sale for her Mother's belongings. No one in her family was interested in the clock, which I find kinda sad. She was thrilled that I loved it and I paid her asking price of $200 for it. The movement is not stamped/signed. I never brought it up to Dorian's shop for an opinion. Although an 8-day clock, it keeps exceptional time over the course of 10 days. It has as a very strong gong strike on the hours and half hour. The 8" dial (incl. brass bezel) is perfect. The brass center design of the dial is kind of a shield with 3 oak leaves, and I've seen that before. Although the 5 1/2" brass pendulum bob is a good one, I can pretty much guarantee that it's an old replacement. I think the pendulum bob should match the shield /oak leaf design on the dial. I'm leaning toward Kienzle as the maker, but if anyone out there has an opinion, I'd sure like to hear it! Height is 52" x upper width of 19" x lower width of 17 1/4" x 8" depth. Thanks for takin' a peek...
Lovely clock, stole this one lol
Thank you Kerry for the love on this one! It was an 'ok' price way back then, but clocks took a real HIT when the economy took a nose dive. Today, this clock really isn't worth much more than I paid for it. But that's ok, someone will get it out of 'my estate sale' some day!
LOL, I afaid my children won't have an estate sale, just load up the horde and have a 2 day garage sale, pick and match $2.00
Kerry, I'm laughing so hard I can barely type! The &%# state of CA is going to conduct a 'garage sale' for $$ for the City coffers if I don't do something... oh, shoot, I think I'll live forever instead. Wait a minute, on second thought, I'd rather be transferred back, way way back in time...
Appreciate the love of this big ol clock from you guys! Thanks Bruce99, pops52, aghcollect, and vanskyock24
Well, even though not a give-away-price, I would have paid it. You got a fair deal. Can't tell you how to go back in time, but an old man told me the secret to immortality. "Find out where you are going to die. Then, just don't go there!" Really admire the clock.
You're right, it was a fair price and to see this gal smile was all the better. Thanks for the love on this clock! And how I love the old man's "secret" to immortality! Very funny!
Hi Tutzie..I have a Gustafson Becker double weight wall clock similar to yours..and before we put into storage the last time we moved it too! kept wonderful time and had the most lovely sound when it gonged...but ever since it was in storage it hasn't worked ... I suspect dust has clogged it up....unfortunately there is know one I can take it to around here to have a look at it...I do miss having it work...:-(
Hi inky, Your clock may be 'similar' in appearance or size, but yours is by far a much better clock produced by Gustav Becker - and it's WEIGHT driven, which is better, not spring driven like mine. Depending upon when your clock movement was last cleaned, it might just need to be lubricated with some clock oil. A good cleaning can last quite a few number of years.
Inky, go to any shop with the mech. open & ask them to blow it out with air before you waste any money. Better if you can get the mech. moving a bit while they blow it out.
Many thanks for the advice Tutzie we will have a go and see what happens..we are actually putting it back into storage... well covered this time...:-)..as we are moving again..I have another clock I would love you to tell me about one day when you have time...I was told it was an American when I bought it..it still has part of the label on the back but! I have never been able to find out the maker, you might recognize the label and be able to tell me so I can do some research on it, if you wouldn't mind...no hurry!...:-)
Yes, inky, please let me and all of us know what the partial label reads and give us a little description of the clock! I am only visiting CW on a limited basis as I am on jury duty now...
Hello Tutzie....I have just posted my clock..thank you so much!...:-)
