Couldn't believe I found this ! It was surrounded by a lot of junk on the shelf at our GW. Beautiful hand painted roses on a gilded and beaded 5 1/2" bowl. The mark on the bottom says "Hand Painted" with a Nippon maple leaf mark that dates it from 1891 -1911. The Morimura Bros. Co. in Japan was the major producer of "Nippon" and Noritake porcelain during this time period. Nippon is a westernized version of "Ni hon" meaning Japan. Pieces were required to have a mark from their country of origin for export after the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890. So this piece should be fairly early. Unfortunately there is a hairline crack in the bottom, which doesn't effect the beauty of this little piece at all. -Mike-

Picked up a nice book on Nippon the other day called "Van Patten's ABC's of Collecting Nippon" Cobalt has a lot of categories. Roses. Orchids, Mums, Pendants lots of gold and beading. Nippon porcelain is very beautiful and comes in a wide variety of shapes and styles. For a long time it was always under rated as grandma's junk. The book was published in 2005 and a little bowl like this in perfect condition would have been a $300 to $500 piece. Now since the recession the market has been cut in half. So this bowl with the hairline crack probably would bring only $50-$75 as a marked "Maple leaf" piece. Think I've found the beginnings of a new collection ! -Mike-

Mike before I knew what Nippon stood for I practically gave away several pieces.

I've already made a big mistake Aim....I missed a landscape plate the other day at GW that I had seen in this book. It had been there since before Christmas and they wanted eight bucks for it. I thought it was too much even thought it was marked "Noritake". It was still there a few days ago I looked at it again and passed. Now it's gone ! Dumb Dumb Dumb !! :P....lol -Mike-

Aww sorry Mike. It was just meant for the other person I guess, and a lesson learned to never hesitate. LoL

Well Aim I found a piece the other day at the same store ! Nice little landscape plate with a Nippon mark. Grabbed that baby right away...lol. Not as nice as the first one but it's still the real deal. Thanks for reminding me I forgot to post it. :)

Yes it is... I have the Van Patten book that these marks came from. I think it has like 15-20 pages devoted to just marks !

It sure would Aim ! You know my little bowl was priced at $300.00 about 10 years ago ! Nippon is in the dumper right now unless it's an extremely large and rare piece. I see that dish is only a 7.00 ! Might be worth bidding on...lol

No, I was pointing it out for you Mike because I knew you had a piece with the cobalt blue, but thanks for the heads up on prices/value. I love the pink and burgundy rose Nippon pieces.
