My great great grandfather built this hope chest in Norway back in 1847. He was a carpenter and built a shelf and drawer inside. Handmade nails securing the locking piece. My great great grandmother did the Rosemaling. It was brought over by my great grandmother when she was a little girl. Family tradition is that it gets passed down to the first born daughter. I am the 4th generation. I would like to get this insured but unsure of the value.

This is a very lovely heirloom. Generally speaking members of this site do not offer monetary appraisals. Some have been known to bend this rule, however they shall remain nameless. :)
Perhaps a local antique dealer may be of service, or a rule bender may show up!

Thanks trunk man. I am more interested to find others whom own norwegian hope chests that are dated over 100 years like mine. Other than knowing that the brides name is put on it. I would love to know more history behind the trunks in general. There really is no appropriate appraisal for a sentimental, family made piece. I've looked around a lot of sites and it's hard to find others.

These trunks, particularly one like yours in beautiful shape and so wonderfully painted have a good value, and are sought after. Check out a few auction sites...?

I just "inherited" this piece early. I've already explained to my small children not to touch it, play with it, etc.. I have to swing by the local antique restoration shop some time soon to get a quote on re springing an antique chair so ill have plenty more questions for them. They're a great local shop and did some other work for me a few years back. I'm so glad I found this site. It's nice to talk to other collectors. I'm having so much fun looking at the collectibles. Thanks again
