Large 31" x 4" x 10.5" Salesman's Demonstrator which I believe is a later updated version of the original patent.
Patented by Rufus M. Smith of LaFargeville, New York, March 30, 1869, patent No. 88,339.
Quoting from the patent the gate is "a combination of an upright swinging frame (or crane), which while moving with said frame is also capable of sliding movement back and forth upon the same". Very versatile.
Love your gate collection!!
