I picked up this chest recently for $30. Of course, the locking mechanism was removed at some point in its life.

It had glue from what I think was duct tape that had been put on it. It had water spots and dirt on it. I used Goof Off Miracle Remover which can be purchased at any of those home improvement stores to get the glue residue off it.

I then used Old English polish on to clean it up. That was all that was needed.

My guess is that this chest is from the 30's or 40's. If anyone can pinpoint the year it was manufactured, that would be great.

It's a beautiful piece that I will be keeping. It's value? Priceless.

I would guess the 40's but most of the old Montgomery Wards catalogs are available online free as are their archives. I normally search them for old stoves but furniture is there also if you hunt around. This is a beautiful piece you have. You didn't give dimensions but I would say perhaps a blanket chest.

      Hi fhr...

Thank you so much for responding.

Well slap me for not putting up the dimensions. They are: 42.5" wide x 18" tall x 18" deep. If I measure the outside of the lid, it makes the chest 44" wide.
How can I get hold of a Montgomery Wards catalog from that era?
