If one follows J.Mergl et.al. in "Loetz Boehmisches Glas 1880-1940" ed. Hatje Cantz, page 54 fig.9 then Loetz rainbow glass looks totally different as compared to your pair. It is described as being very rare, whereas your type of rainbow glass is quite abundant and may more correctly be attributed to Harrach and/or Webb or still unknown. To my opinion, the tendency to assign vases without any serious proof to Loetz is increasing, especially in the early Loetz glass, where only limited documentation is available.

      Hi MSL
      Very nice
Ricke (i.e. the 1st edition) Vol 1 of Loetz actually has a small vase in these colors in it ... page 300 ... and hence some of the confusion (dropped in later versions) ... one recently went by on eBay with a Stourbridge stamp on it .... although it was clear rather than opalescent cased ... Remains confusing ...

SteveS, so the pair are Loetz for certain?
    13. Moonstonelover21 Moonstonelover21, 11 years ago
SteveS, many thanks for confirmation on the attribution. I am so happy the clarity was made. Is there anyway u could shoot me the picture of the vase?

There is photographic evidence to back up Loetz - two pieces in the same decor, both marked (I/14), one is a bowl without the white lining, the other is a ribbed ewer that has the white lining. This was posted in the discussion on Dave Peterson's rainbow bowl that was posted in the Bohemian Glass group on facebook a while back. The vases posted here do not have added decoration, but they are the same glass as the ewer with the Dek marking.

this type of rainbow glass was also documented in one of the small museums in the czech republic. It's one of the museums curated by Jitka Lenocovich. (sp) As was with a good amount of other early loetz.

It's true very little focus has been paid in the books to early loetz glass but that doesn't mean all of the attributions are wrong and it was someone else.
Loetz *did* do a lot of this sort of thing. They also did alabaster glasses and a baroque style cut color cut to clear. opalescent glass and of course many kinds of satin glass (and more) the roman numeral marks are pretty distinctive and unique markings.

Harrach DID make rainbow glass but I haven't seen one with a harrach mark on *this* kind of rainbow glass. So at this point there is no evidence that Harrach made a rainbow glass just like this. But they were in heavy competition with Loetz so who knows. maybe there was a Harrach version of this much in the same way marmorietes was duplicated by both companies. There is even LESS evidence that Webb made glass like this.

A rainbow Vase clearly signed by the Harrach "Propeller" mark was shown in Oct.2013 by "getthatmon" in CW. The rainbow vase in the old Ricke Vol 1 page 300 is highly iridized and the rainbow decor refers to vases made 1923-27. One of the signatures 1/14 (referred to by Warren) does not show the typical Loetz roman "I"/14 but just a vertical "|"/14, to my opinion never used by Loetz as "Dekor" reference. The other I/14 signature is nearly unreadable. Of course this decor may be made by Loetz, I have fotos of about 15 different shapes of vases with rainbow decor, but up to now I did not find any really matching "Musterschnitt".
    22. bohemianglassandmore bohemianglassandmore, 11 years ago
A few thoughts -there are a lot of shapes missing from the Musterschnitt, unfortunately - I have many pieces of oceanik, marmoriertes, those "finned" pieces, satin yellow, pink & blue "moriage", even turmalin, that are not represented. Rainbow is also one of them. There are a couple of shapes circa 1907 that list "Regenbogen mit kristall" among the decors, and one example is shown in Ricke I, as Steve previously mentioned, and it has the same ribbed crystal outer layer. The Harrach rainbow piece posted by getthatmon more closely resembles the older rainbow pieces (no lining), and was probably made around the same time as the Loetz pieces (like the competing lines of marmoriertes glass). In reality, were they in fierce competition, or simply filling orders from the same customers? Personally, I wouldn't split hairs over whether the I in the Dek mark was "sans serif" or not, if the gold decoration is the same. A healthy discussion to have - it's all we have until more documentation comes to light.
    23. bohemianglassandmore bohemianglassandmore, 11 years ago
I also wanted to clarify that I think that the rainbow pieces we are discussing (like Lee's) are in my opinion part of the older production (pre 1900), not the line that was re-introduced ten plus years later.
    24. kairomalte, 11 years ago
Concerning Turmalin, you will find it explicitly in the "Musterschnitte under 2/528 , 2/529 and the following described as "mit Batzen" up to 2/558

Right - but this one is not found:

I do not know how large this vase is, but the shape may be II/5210 (though Turmalin is not explicitly listed).

I would go for pre-1880 - think they are mostly prior to Max Ritter von Spaun ... and prior to use of Coralline / Moriage which looks to be 1880's ...
This surface for is not good for decoration ... Think the one I have (which is in this shape and color etc) had applied glass filigree on each side of the neck at some point ... only the broken surface remains ...

SteveS, the pair is arriving today..and will take pictures to see if all said is accurate or? CW will be the fist to know..I am excited to have found a pair even if they are not perfect. The price was right.... :)
