This tool was used by lumbermen as well as land owners who hired the lumbermen to harvest the land owners trees.
The lumberman would use this tool to slash a mark on a tree or on a piece of sawn lumber to identify the product as the property of the their company.
They were also used by the land owner to mark his trees in a particular fashion as to inform the lumber firm as to which trees he allowed them to cut. Often times, the lumbermen cut the trees that a land owner had marked.
